Staff

Student Health Services staff members hold all necessary degrees, licenses, and certifications to practice in Missouri

SHS completes a credentialing process of medical providers to ensure
degrees, licenses, and certifications are accurate and current. Our staff members have particular training and experience in working with university students. They are committed to the growth and personal development of each student within the University community who seeks assistance. In addition, they provide consultation to various health-related student organizations and assist with training of faculty and staff who deal extensively with students.

Medical Services Staff

Providers

Alan I. Glass, M.D.

Assistant Vice Chancellor and Director
Dr. Glass has been the Assistant Vice Chancellor and Director of the Habif Health and Wellness Center at Washington University in St. Louis since January, 2004. A graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, he completed a pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He practiced emergency medicine for several years before entering the field of college heath. His areas of interest include college health, men's health, sexual health, cultural competency in health care, and medical student education. He is the President of the American College Health Association.

Lisa Ross, M.D.

Director of Clinical Services
Dr. Ross graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School, and completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Rochester. She has served on the faculty of St. Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis, where she taught medical students and residents. Dr. Ross joined Student Health Services in 2006, after several years in private practice.

Dori Donnell Lingle, M.S.N., RNC., F.N.P

Nurse Practitioner, Medical Services
Dori Lingle graduated as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1994, with a Master of Science in Nursing. She is licensed with the State Board of Nursing, and is certified with the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Dori’s experience includes Intensive Care nursing at the University of Missouri Hospital-Columbia, and the John Crowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She worked as a Public Health Nurse with the Peace Corps in Central America. After completing her master degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner Dori was employed at Johns Hopkins/National Institute of Aging, Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging in Baltimore, Maryland. In St Louis Dori has taught at the Barnes Jewish School of Nursing and has volunteered in medical clinics serving the Hispanic population of St Louis. In 2001 she founded a non-profit organization to provide medical care for newly-arrived immigrants. Dori has been in private practice since 2004. She joined the staff at Washington University Student Health Services in 2007.

Jason Mehrtens, M.D.

Staff Physician, Medical Services
Dr. Mehrtens obtained his medical degree from Southern Illinois University. Following graduation, he completed his residency in Family Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center, and then served an additional four years on active duty as an Army physician. He then completed a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. His special interests include caring for adolescents and young adults, in addition to sports medicine and medical student/resident education.

Chris Ohlemeyer, M.D.

Staff Physician, Medical Services
Dr. Ohlemeyer received her medical degree from University of Missouri-Columbia. She completed her pediatric residency at Saint Louis University and finished her training with an Adolescent Medicine fellowship from University of Cincinnati. She returned to St. Louis to run the adolescent health services for St. Louis County Health Department. Since 1991, she has been Division Director of Adolescent Medicine for Saint Louis University’s Department of Pediatrics. Her special interests include treating clients with eating disorders, psychosocial issues and gynecological problems. Dr. Ohlemeyer has been active in state, regional and national organizations that promote appropriate health services for adolescents and young adults.

Cristina Walden, M.D.

Staff Physician , Medical Services
Dr. Walden is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). She completed residency training in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and endocrinology fellowship training at UTMB and the University of Toronto. She has been an instructor of medicine at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine and in the private practice of endocrinology.

Cynthia Wichelman, M.D.

Staff Physician, Medical Services
Dr. Wichelman joined Medical Services in 2002.  She received her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at the combined program of George Washington University/Georgetown University/University of Maryland. She has trained residents and medical students in Emergency Medicine and provided health care in rural areas of Alaska and to hill tribes in Thailand. She serves as Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Washington University’s School of Medicine as well as Course Director of the Mini-Medical School, a science education course offered to the public. She also serves as a coursemaster for Olin Grand Rounds in the Olin Business School.

 

Nurses

Debra Harp, RN, MBA

Director of Administration
Ms. Harp received her Registered Nursing degree from Mennonite Hospital
School of Nursing and Illinois State University in Bloomington, IL and a
Masters of Business Administration Degree from the Executive MBA program
at Washington University in St. Louis. Her nursing career forcused on
Emergency Medicine in the St. Louis area followed by several years as a
Business Analyst with General American Life Insurance Company. She joined
Student Health Services as Associate Director, Chief, Administration in
May 2000. She serves as an advisor to the Student Health Advisory
Committee (SHAC) and is an Academic Advisor to students of WU Arts and
Sciences Programs.

Kelly Reid, RN-C

Head Nurse, Medical Services
Ms. Reid graduated from nursing school in 1993 and worked for ten years as a pediatric emergency room nurse and as a Certified Adult Critical Care nurse. She joined SHS in 2001 and is credentialed in College Health Nursing. Ms. Reid has a special interest in teaching self care and preventative health care to college students.

 

Nursing staff consists of Registered Nurses, Registered Medical Assistants and Receptionists who come from a variety of backgrounds in medicine, including pediatrics, emergency medicine, office based medicine, and other specialty areas.

 

   

Radiology

Tony O'Rourke, R.T.(R)

Radiology, Medical Services
Mr. O’Rourke received his AAS in radiography from Kaskaskia College in Illinois in 2008.  Along with his most recent work as weekend-lead radiographer at Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville, IL, he brings 11 years of experience to Student Health Services pharmacy.  He joined Student Health Services in 2011

Christina Sanford, R.T.(R)(T)

Radiology, Medical Services
Ms. Christina Sanford graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Radiography. She graduated from the Mercy St. Louis School of Radiologic Technology. She furthered her education and graduated from West Virginia University Hospital School of Radiation Therapy.  Her career experience includes working at a level 1 trauma center in St. Louis Mo for almost 5 years. She also worked closely with the radiology students at Mercy St. Louis School of Radiologic Technology.
   

Nutrition

Connie Diekman, MEd, RD, LD, FADA

Dietitian, Medical Services
Connie Diekman, M.Ed, RD, LD, FADA is Director of University Nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Diekman is Past President of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). Diekman served on the ADA House of Delegates Leadership Team and was a member of the ADA’s Board of Directors from 2004 - 2009. She served as a delegate from the state of Missouri to the ADA House of Delegates (governing body). She is a former chair of the American Heart Association – Missouri affiliate.

Diekman is a former media spokesperson for ADA and has been quoted in thousands of magazines, newspapers and on the internet. She has appeared in countless radio and television interviews at the local and national level, including the TODAY show to the Oprah show. Diekman currently serves on several advisory panels providing her expertise in communications, especially related to nutrition and consumer behavior change.

Prior to Washington University, Diekman was in private practice working with physicians, corporations and as an instructor at St. Louis’ Fontbonne University. She is the voice of the “Eating Right” minute, which airs daily, on WBBM radio in Chicago. She is a former television nutrition reporter with St. Louis’ NBC affiliate and the local FOX affiliate.

Honors include the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from Fontbonne University, the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year Award from the Missouri Dietetic Association, the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year – Missouri, and the Dr. Arthur Strauss Award, from the American Heart Association – St. Louis.

In addition to the ADA Diekman is a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders and The Obesity Society. Diekman earned her master’s degree in education - counseling from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition - dietetics from Fontbonne College (now University). She completed her dietetic internship at St. Louis’ Barnes - Jewish Hospital.
   

Pharmacy

Shannon S. Gergen, Pharm.D.

Registered Pharmacist
Dr. Gergen obtained his pharmacy degree from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and will receive a Masters of Business Administration degree from McKendree University in 2011.  He serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy.  His career experience includes working in community and long-term care settings.  He joined Student Health Services in 2011.       

 

   
 


 

Women's Health

 

Gary Wasserman, M.D.

Staff Gynecologist, Medical Services
Dr. Wasserman has provided gynecology services to Student Health Services since 1984. He graduated from the Six-Year Medical Program at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and holds an academic position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Washington University School of Medicine. He maintains a private practice. In 2007, he received the teaching award from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for work with the Residents at Missouri Baptist Hospital. He participated in the partnership program between Barnes Jewish Hospital and Riga, Latvia's Bikkur Holim Hospital and Maternity Hospital. He is the past president of Central Reform Congregation and is currently Board Treasurer of Hillel at Washington University. Dr. Wasserman is a diplomat of the American Board of OB-Gyn. In addition, Dr. Wasserman serves on the Washington University's Parent Council.

 

Mental Health Services

 

Thomas Brounk, Ph.D.

Director of Mental Health Services
Dr. Brounk graduated cum laude with departmental distinction in psychology from Carleton College, and received both his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in counseling psychology from Ohio State University. He trained at OSU's Counseling and Consultation Service, Denison University's Counseling Service, and the Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and completed his internship at the University of Texas at Austin Counseling and Mental Health Center. In 2002, Dr. Brounk was presented the Kathryn Hopwood Award from Ohio State's Student Personnel Assistantship program for outstanding and sustained leadership, commitment, and service to the counseling and psychology profession. Dr. Brounk's professional interests include anxiety management, GLBT issues, and multicultural concerns. In 2009, he received the James M Holobuagh honor in recognition of his commitment and contribution to the St. Louis LGBT community.

Kathy Brock, Ph.D.

Assistant Director of Mental Health Services
Dr. Brock graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in journalism. She received her doctoral degree from the MU Counseling Psychology program and completed her internship at the University of California-Irvine Counseling Center. She obtained specialized post-doctoral training at the Traumatic Stress Institute in Connecticut and at Columbia University’s Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She joined the Washington University staff after serving as Director of the Counseling Center at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY. She provides both individual and couples’ therapy and enjoys working with students on issues such as depression, anxiety, traumatic life experiences, grief, and academic performance problems. She has longstanding interest in human diversity in areas of race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual identity. She is an active volunteer with Physicians for Human Rights.

 

Psychiatry

Karen Boesch, M.D.

Staff Psychiatrist-Medical Services/Mental Health Services
Dr. Boesch graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit. She received her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and trained in psychiatry at St. Louis University. Also at St. Louis University, she completed a one-year fellowship in geriatric psychiatry. In private practice at St. Mary's Hospital, she treated adult and geriatric patients. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Eastern Missouri Psychiatric Association. Dr. Boesch's board certification includes general and geriatric psychiatry. Dr. Boesch joined Student Health Services in 2003.

Eleatha Surratt, M.D.

Staff Psychiatrist-Medical Services/Mental Health Services
A graduate of the University of Tulsa and the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Dr. Surratt completed her residency and fellowship training at St. Louis University and the University of Colorado. She has worked with children and adolescents in academic medicine, private practice, and various non-profit agencies. She is especially interested in anxiety and the psychological effects of physical illnesses. Dr. Surratt is board certified in general psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry.

 

 

Counseling

 

Cathy Vander Pluym, RN, B.S.

Mental Health Nurse, Case Manager, Mental Health Services
Ms. Vander Pluym graduated from the DePaul Hospital School of Nursing. She received her B.S. from the College of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. She has worked in Student Health Services at Washington University since 1974.
 

Margaret Campbell Davis, MSW

Staff Counselor, Mental Health Services
Ms. Campbell Davis received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Virginia, worked in community mental health for ten years, then returned to The Brown School to receive her MSW in mental health from Washington University. She finds counseling a diverse student population both fascinating and rewarding (including differences in socio-economic status, culture, level of ability, gender and sexual orientation). Much of her work centers around students who experience the challenges of depression, anxiety, and alcoholism or addiction. She uses a variety of clinical methods: supportive and insight oriented counseling, mindfulness and relaxation techniques.
 

Gregory A. Goldman, Ph.D.

Staff Psychologist, Mental Health Services
Dr. Goldman graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Arkansas with his bachelor's degree in psychology. He went on to complete his Master's and Doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. His doctoral training included traineeships at OU's student counseling center as well as a rural community mental health center. After working for a year as a substance abuse counselor, Dr. Goldman completed his predoctoral internship at the University of Pittsburgh Counseling Center. He then went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan Psychological Clinic (a division of the Institute for Human Adjustment). Dr. Goldman provides individual, couples and group therapy and is particularly interested in how people relate to themselves and others; managing depression, anxiety, difficult emotions, and transitions; diversity concerns including GLBT issues; mindfulness; and existential concerns.
 

Steven Kraushaar, Psy.D.

Staff Psychologist, Mental Health Services
Dr. Kraushaar graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Denver with a degree in Human Communication. He went on to complete his Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver. His specialty focus tool was couples therapy. He completed his internship at the University of California, Santa Barbara Counseling and Career Services and his post-doctoral training at Yale Health Services. His professional interests include couples treatment, eating disorders, depression, relationship and family issues as well as grief and existential issues. He enjoys working with both LGBT students and students of color. Dr. Kraushaar is a member of the eating disorders team.
 

Jackie Miller, M.Ed., MSW, LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Services
Ms. Miller graduated cum laude from Maryville University. She received both of her graduate degrees from Washington University -- a Master's in Education from the Graduate Institute of Education and a Master's in Social Work from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work. Her areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, adult children of alcoholics, and women's issues. Ms. Miller has specialized interests in the treatment of eating concerns, spirituality and counseling, and the mind/body/spirit connection. She also serves as an advisor to Reflections student group.
 

Jennifer Self, Ph.D., LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor, Mental Health Services
Dr. Self earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a Doctoral degree in Counseling and Family Therapy from Saint Louis University. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Dr. Self has provided mental health counseling to college students in university settings for several years. She enjoys working with a diverse student body including LGBTQIA students, students of color, and international students. Ms. Self incorporates behavioral and person-centered techniques while counseling individuals, couples, and groups. Her areas of special interest include interpersonal effectiveness, relationship concerns, depression, anxiety, and ADHD.
 

Karolyn Senter, Ph.D., LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor, Mental Health Services
Dr. Senter earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Missouri and a Doctoral degree in Counseling and Family Therapy from Saint Louis University. Before coming to Washington University, she worked for several years as a mid-level administrator/investigator/divorce mediator in the care & protection and domestic relations units of the 22 nd Judicial Circuit of Missouri. She was also employed as a family therapist in a residential treatment facility and worked part-time as the Training Coordinator for the Center for Counseling and Family therapy (CCFT) at Saint Louis University. Dr. Senter’s clinical training was received at the CCFT and through the Psychiatry Department’s Family Therapy Clinic at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Her clinical interests include: family and relationship issues, couple’s and group counseling, women’s issues, domestic violence, issues of diversity, and spirituality in the healing/counseling process. She is currently the co-advisor for the student group SARAH and is the new outreach coordinator for international student services at the counseling center.
 

Dorothy J. Van Buren , Ph.D.,

Staff Psychologist, Mental Health Service
Dr. Van Buren graduated with honors in psychology from the University of Kansas and received both her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in psychology from Louisiana State University.  She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham's School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Van Buren is a licensed psychologist in the states of Missouri and Illinois, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine. She is a certified Health Services Provider in Missouri and is listed in the National Register of Psychologists. Dr. Van Buren also serves as an off-site clinical supervisor for graduate students in the Department of Psychology at Washington University. Her professional interests are in the areas of eating disorders and obesity, behavioral treatments of chronic illnesses, and marital/family relationships.

Bryant Davis, MA

Administrative Assistant
Mr. Davis graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor’s in history. Currently, he is finishing his Master of Arts in history at Eastern Illinois University. His professional experiences have focused on serving students and the general public alike. While at Eastern Illinois University he worked as a graduate assistant; in addition he also served as a substitute teacher in Coles County Illinois. His most recent work was spent as secretary and receptionist at a local family practitioner’s office.

 

Health Promotion Services Staff

 

Melissa Ruwitch

Assistant Director
Chief, Health Promotion Services
Ms. Ruwitch received a Bachelor's degree in English and Women’s Studies from Colby College. She worked in women’s health advocacy in Washington, D.C. and helped establish WU's Alumni and Parents Admission Program. Since 2000, she has built the health promotion department, developing programs, services and resources for students on the subjects of alcohol and other drugs, basic self-care, sleep, stress, anxiety, depression, body image, nutrition, fitness, sexual health, and sexual violence.  Melissa manages various outreach efforts and communications projects for SHS, including the Stressbusters program and the Student Health 101 e-magazine.  She works with Residential Peer Health Educators (RPHEs), Resident Advisors, the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), the Committee on Rape Education (CORE), Phi Lambda Psi, Reflections, Uncle Joe’s, Active Minds, and other student leaders to enhance WU students’ living/learning opportunities.

Ginny Fendell, MSW, LCSW

Mental Health Promotion Associate, Health Promotion Services
Ms. Fendell earned her BA in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and her Master of Social Work with an emphasis in health and mental health from George Warren Brown School of Social Work. She completed clinical internships with Life Crisis Services and with the Washington University Student Health Services. She designs and implements stress management programs for individuals and groups, and works with students involved in peer health education on mental health topics including stress, anxiety, sleep, and depression. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
   

Substance Abuse Specialist

 

Betsy Foy, Ed D, CHES

Assistant Director
Dr. Foy received her Doctoral degree from Nova Southeastern University in Education with a concentration in Organizational Leadership. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from St. Louis University and her Master’s Degree in Health Science from Washington University. She has been a part of the Student Health Service since 1997. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist and State Certified Substance Abuse Professional. Dr. Foy serves on the American College Health Association’s Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Coalition and is a Consulting Editor for the Journal of American College Health. She has published over a dozen articles in professional journals related to college health. Dr. Foy   is an Academic Advisor to students in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Health and Wellness consultant to the WU Bears Football Team and   works with individual students on addictive behaviors including alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and gambling. She is adjunct faculty at Washington University’s University College in the Nonprofit Management Masters Degree Program.
   

Sexual Assault and Community Health Services

 

Kim Webb , MEd

Assistant Director
Sexual Assault and Community Health Services
Ms. Webb graduated from the University of Missouri- Columbia. She has 14 years experience working with issues of violence against women. In 2007 she received a Catalyst Award in recognition for her work in the LGBT community. She serves on the Board of Directors for Step Up: American Association for Rwandan Women and on the traveling Trauma Training Team that serves Rwandans. As violence continues to be a huge issue in our society, Kim has an increased interest in addressing the growing prevalence of violence against men.

Patrick O'Leary, MIM

Mr. O’Leary earned his BA from Missouri State University, and his Master’s degree in Information Management from Washington University in St. Louis. He joined Student Health Services in 2002.
