FAQs
When will my coverage begin?
Students who are currently enrolled at WUSTL and will be continuing their education during the Fall semester will have coverage on the current plan through The Lewer Agency until August 14, 2009. These students will have coverage through the Aetna Student Health Plan effective August 15, 2009.
Students who will be new to WUSTL in the Fall semester will begin coverage with the Aetna Student Health Plan effective August 1, 2009.
How do I enroll?
Relax, this one’s easy. You don’t have to do anything! All full-time under graduates and full-time, degree-seeking graduate students are eligible for the plan and are automatically enrolled once you are fully registered for the Fall semester.
What about my dependents?
Students may enroll their dependents in the Aetna Student Health Plan effective August 1, 2009. All dependent enrollment will be done direclty with Aetna Student Health. the deadline for dependent enrollment is September 15, 2009.
Can a student opt out of the insurance program or obtain a waiver by demonstrating other coverage?
Opt outs are not permitted and waivers are not provided. All full-time degree seeking students are included in the insurance program.
What does the student health fee cover?
In addition to health insurance coverage, the student health fee covers many services such as free mental health visits, some free lab tests, free nutritional counseling, health and wellness programs throughout campus, as well as a variety of other health and wellness initiatives that are provided to the students of the University.
What happens to the student's insurance coverage if the student loses dependent coverage because a parent lost his or her job?
A student's health insurance plan will remain in effect for a complete policy year (August 1 - July 31) while they are students of the University. They will not lose coverage under the student health insurance plan if the parent plan changes due to loss of employment or other circumstances.
Which insurance plan is primary, the student health insurance plan or dependent coverage provided by a parent?
Under Missouri law, the subscriber's insurance plan, in this case the student's, is primary to any coverage the student may have as a dependent under a parent's health insurance plan.
What happens to the student's health insurance coverage when the student graduates?
Coverage ends on January 12 when a student graduates in December and on July 31 when a student graduates in May. After graduation, students may elect to continue health insurance coverage purchased directly from the insurance carrier.
Does the student have health insurance coverage while studying abroad?
Yes. Coverage is considered "in-network" with in-network benefits while traveling outside of the US.
What happens to the student's health insurance coverage if the student takes a medical leave of absence from school?
