Moderation Management (MM)

An Alcohol Moderation Support Group

Moderation Management (MM) is a support system -- not treatment -- for people trying to moderate their own drinking. MM provides a supportive environment for people who have made the healthy decision to reduce their drinking to harmless levels. MM provides guidelines to help members achieve their self-management goals and to develop skills that lead to a more balanced way of living.

MM is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA); however, abstinence is not the ultimate goal of MM. Each member must abstain from alcohol for the first four weeks of participation in the group, but after four weeks, he or she sets a goal to drink in moderation. MM is not based in any religion.

Some people find that moderation is not possible. These people may need regular treatment in a program focused on abstinence.

Nine Steps Toward Moderation and Positive Lifestyle Changes

  1. Attend meetings or on-line groups to learn about the Moderation Management program.
  2. Abstain from drinking alcohol for 30 days and complete steps three - six during this time.
  3. Examine how drinking has affected your life.
  4. Make a list of your priorities in life.
  5. Take a look at how much, how often, and under what circumstances you drank alcohol.
  6. Learn the MM guidelines and limits for moderate drinking.
  7. Set moderate drinking limits and start weekly "small steps" toward balance and moderation in other areas of your life.
  8. Review your progress and update your goals.
  9. Continue to make positive lifestyle changes and attend meetings when you need support or would like to help newcomers.
