- Male condoms and dams are available for free in Health Promotion Services.
Male Condom Instructions
- If you decide to have sex, use a new condom each time to reduce the risk of pregnancy or transmitting diseases.
- Check the expiration date. Do not use expired condoms or condoms that are yellowed, brittle, or sticky.
- Handle a condom carefully so as not to damage it with fingernails, teeth, or other sharp objects.
- Put on the condom when the penis is erect and before any genital contact with partner.
- Hold the tip of the condom so that air will not be trapped, and unroll the condom all the way down the erect penis.
- To increase pleasure and to decrease the risk of the condom breaking, use a condom with water-based lubricant. Lubricant can be used inside the condom’s reservoir tip as well. Do not use oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, mineral oil, massage oils, and body lotions; they can cause a latex condom to break.
- To remove the condom, hold it firmly at the base of the penis and withdraw while the penis is still erect to prevent slippage. Throw the condom away.
- Store condoms in cool, dry places.
- Latex condoms are available at Health Promotion Services. If you are allergic to latex, you might want to try polyurethane condoms.
- For oral contact with a penis, use a non-lubricated condom. Water-based lubricant on the inside may increase sensation.
Female Condom Instructions
- If you decide to have sex, use a new condom each time to reduce the risk of pregnancy or transmitting diseases.
- Check the expiration date. Do not use expired female condoms or condoms that are yellowed, brittle, or sticky.
- Handle a condom carefully so as not to damage it with fingernails, teeth, or other sharp objects.
- Add water-based lubricant to the inside of the female condom pouch.
- Put on the condom before any genital contact with partner and/or toys used for penetration.
- Squeeze the inner ring with thumb and middle finger (so it becomes long and narrow) and then place inner ring and pouch into the vaginal opening.
- With your index finger, push the inner ring as far into the vagina as it will go while making sure that the condom is not twisted.
- Guide the penis inside the condom.
- Remove condom before standing up. Twist the outer ring and pull the condom while keeping the sperm inside the condom. Throw the condom away.
Dental Dam Instructions
- If you decide to have oral-anal sex or oral-vaginal sex, use a new dental dam each time to reduce the risk of transmitting disease.
- To make a dental dam out of a male or female condom, simply cut off the tip and cut down one side.
- Check the expiration date. Do not use expired dental dams or dental dams that are yellowed, brittle, sticky, or have holes.
- Handle a dental dam carefully so as not to damage it with fingernails, teeth, or other sharp objects.
- Rinse off any powder that's on the dam.
- Apply water-based lubricant on the vulva or anus before using the dam to increase the sensation of the partner.
- Place and hold the dam against the vulva or anus of the receiving partner.
- Be sure to only use one side of the dental dam.
